What is lego® serious play®?

LEGO® Serious Play® is a hands-on facilitated technique and methodology designed to help teams think, communicate, and solve problems by building models with LEGO bricks.

Designed by the LEGO Group on the 1990s, this method of team building and organizational development has transformed how leaders improve productivity amongst their employees.  Instead of relying on slide decks, long meetings, or surface-level discussions, this method invites participants to think with their hands, actually creating their ideas in 3D to share with others.

Through guided questions and structured exercises, individuals build models that represent their ideas, challenges, and perspectives. These models become the starting point for deeper conversations, better collaboration, and clearer decision-making.

A Hands-On Approach to Team Building, Strategy, and Innovation

Why LEGO® Serious Play® Works

Most workplace challenges aren’t caused by a lack of ideas. They come from misalignment, unclear communication, or voices that aren’t being heard.

LEGO® Serious Play® changes that by creating a space where:
  • Every participant contributes equally
  • Complex ideas are easier to express and understand
  • Conversations move beyond surface-level thinking
  • Teams uncover insights faster than traditional meetings

When people build, they access different parts of their thinking. This leads to more creativity, stronger problem-solving, and better outcomes.

What Happens in a LEGO® Serious Play® Workshop?

Every session is guided by Shannon Russell, certified facilitator, and her experienced team, as they follow a structured process designed to maximize engagement and results.

All workshops and events are customized to the individual client's needs. This is a typical workshop example:

1. Skills Building
Participants start with simple builds to get comfortable using LEGO bricks as a communication tool.

2. Individual Builds
Each person creates a model in response to a specific question or challenge.

3. Storytelling & Sharing
Participants explain their models, ensuring every voice is heard and understood.

4. Collective Insights
The group identifies patterns, aligns on ideas, and builds a shared understanding of next steps.

5. Action Planning
The session concludes with clear takeaways, strategies, and next steps.

The Analog Advantage in a Digital World

In today’s fast-paced, technology-driven workplace, most collaboration happens through screens. However,  more technology doesn’t always lead to better thinking. LEGO® Serious Play® offers what I call the Analog Advantage. It gives teams the opportunity to step away from devices and engage in hands-on, real-time collaboration.

This shift leads to:
  • Deeper focus and engagement
  • More meaningful conversations
  • Stronger connections between team members
  • Better retention of ideas and outcomes
